The Math Department is made up of four passionate individuals who enjoy teaching mathematics and strive to help their students see both the importance and beauty of the subject. As a department, they push their students to ask questions, not give up, and believe they can be a better math student today than they were yesterday.

BCCHS Art Show celebrates creativity!

As a part of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), all schools must identify students with a parent or guardian who is a member of the armed forces on active duty to help understand the best ways to support these students. Please review this form or translation The notice asks families to sign and return the form letter if at least one of the student’s parents or guardians is on active duty in the armed forces.

Ms. Rhetta Barron is the Restorative Practices Coordinator at BCCHS. Restorative Practices are ways of pro-actively developing relationships and community, and repairing community when conflict or harm arises through the use of advisory circles, peer mediation, and disciplinary procedures focusing on accountability and restitution rather than punishment.

Dr. Laura Rigolosi is a Staff Developer at BCCHS.
Dr. Rigolosi taught English at BCCHS from 1999-2003, and then began mentoring and coaching NYCDOE teachers while earning her doctorate in English at Columbia’s Teachers College in 2015.

Once a week Dr. Rigolosi comes to BCCHS and and helps teachers hone their instruction by helping them create engaging, relevant lessons that are rooted in research. She works with individual teachers, teams of teachers, facilitates the after school professional learning, and leads workshops for teachers on increasing their classroom literacy practices.

All courses at BCCHS are taught at an honors level. Each subject is designed with a course sequence, laying a foundation in 9th and 10th grades, and preparing students for advance coursework in 11th and 12th grades.

Requirements and options may vary by subject and year.

Advance Placement AP English is built into the curriculum and students may opt to take the AP Exam.

In other subjects, such as Math, Science, History, and Spanish, AP is an elective or additional course offering.

Students complete a year of visual arts and have the opportunity to complete a 3 year Visual Arts sequence.

There are additional requirements for Physical Education, Advisory, and Community Service.

• Discuss which Advanced Placement AP classes they would like to prepare for.
• Students in grades 10 and 11 will fill out an interest survey in Advisory this week.
• Entrance criteria and applications will be sent to those students in grades 10 and 11 who indicate interest on the survey.

Joanna Lamb has been Baruch’s speech-language pathologist since November 2016 and has been with the DOE since 2010.

She holds a BFA in Theater from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and an MS in Speech-Language Pathology from Adelphi University. Ms. Lamb loves that her job is never boring and always brings new challenges. She particularly enjoys working directly with her students on vocabulary, grammar, and conversational skills as well as collaborating with her colleagues.

Ms. Lamb is at Baruch Mondays and Wednesdays and when she’s not here, she is evaluating students all over Manhattan for speech services. After school, she provides speech therapy for adult and geriatric patients. While her career goals shifted after college, she still enjoys watching and performing in theater during her free time. On behalf of the graduation committee, starting on Monday, April 30th, Baruch will be kicking off a weeklong celebration in advisory to recognize the accomplishments of all the seniors in their pursuit towards higher education. This week will be known as “College Decision Week!”

BCCHS young women had the opportunity to learn about women in business, with our partner program “Rock the Street, Wall Street.” Last week, they were able to visit their work site.

Hello 10th and 11th Graders!

The application for the National Honor Society (NHS) for the 2018-19 school year was emailed to 11th & 10th graders. Please read the application to learn more about NHS and what we do. The eligibility requirements are written below. If you are eligible, we HIGHLY encourage you to apply!

Student Eligibility: 10th and 11th grade students who have an 85 or above GPA, a stellar attendance record, and over 20 hours of a diverse range of community service each year.  Students who have not yet fulfilled their 20 hours for the current year can still apply. Students who do not meet this criterion are not eligible candidates and should not apply.  Students who are currently members of NHS and would like to be members next year do not need to fill out this application.

The application for NHS is due on Friday, April 27th by 8:30 am in Mr. King or Ms. Feld’s mailbox in the main office. Late applications will not be accepted. Email Mr. King or Ms. Feld for an application if you did not receive their email.

This annual contest is open to all NYC public school students in grades 4-12 and this year’s theme is, Bayit: Home, Family, and Community. Students are asked to write a poem or essay relating the theme to their personal histories, as well as the experiences of Jews and other religious, ethnic, and cultural groups in New York and America. First place winners receive $500, second place winners receive $300, and third place winners receive $150. Hon. Marco Carrión, Commissioner of the NYC Mayor’s Community Affairs Unit, will host the award ceremony for the winning students at City Hall. The Big Apple Awards Review Committee would like to offer our congratulations on your teacher, Angela Oldenburg, being selected as a 2018 Big Apple Awards finalist. We greatly enjoyed reviewing their application materials and learning about how they are thoughtfully contributing to the success of New York City’s students and schools. Our Review Committee was very impressed reading about the ways that your teacher’s instructional strategies have contributed to students’ academic success.

Out of more than 4,500 nominated teachers, fewer than 250 teachers citywide will be advancing to the Finalist Round – roughly five per district. This is a great accomplishment for both this outstanding educator and your school community.

In May 2017, your school was identified as a  Reward School under state accountability rules defined by the New York State Education Department (NYSED)’s last renewed Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) waiver.

Congratulations!  Your school has been re-identified as a Reward School for the 2017-18 school year based on data from 2016-17.
